The world of wellness coaching is growing rapidly, and with it comes a common question: What’s the difference between a Nurse Coach and a Health Coach?
Both roles focus on helping clients improve their well-being. Nurse Coaching sets the focus apart from standard health coaching by incorporating a unique blend of clinical expertise, compassionate care, and holistic guidance.
Let’s explore what makes Nurse Coaching distinct – and how it might be exactly the support you have been seeking.
Health Coaches help individuals make lifestyle changes to improve their overall health and wellness. Some areas in which they may work with clients include:
· Nutrition and exercise habits
· Weight management
· Sleep and stress reduction
· Goal setting and accountability
Health coaches are skilled motivators and educators, helping clients identify barriers and stay consistent with their wellness goals. However, their training and background typically come from general wellness or behavioral change programs rather than from clinical or healthcare settings.
A Nurse Coach is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has received additional training and may also be board certified in Nurse Coaching. Registered Nurses can gain experience in many specialty areas within the healthcare system. Because of these experiences, Nurse Coaches understand the complexities of many health conditions, medications, and the mind-body connection. This allows them to safely and effectively support individuals living with or at risk for chronic conditions, such as:
· Post partum transitions
· Diabetes
· Hypertension
· Anxiety or depression
· Burnout and stress-related illness
Nurse Coaches combine the art and science of nursing with evidence-based coaching techniques to guide clients toward optimal well-being – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Here’s what sets Nurse Coaching apart from general Health Coaching:
Nurse Coaching | Health Coaching |
Licensed Registered Nurse with clinical experience | Background varies; may not have a medical license |
May be Board-Certified through the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC) | Certification from general wellness or coaching organizations |
Focuses on whole-person healing: mind, body, and spirit | Focuses primarily on behavior change and lifestyle habits |
Integrates evidence-based nursing and motivational interviewing | Utilizes general coaching frameworks |
Can safely support clients with medical conditions and coordinate with healthcare providers | Typically, does not address or manage health conditions |
Emphasizes self-awareness, empowerment, and sustainable change | Emphasizes goal setting and accountability |
Working with a Nurse Coach means you are guided by someone who understands both the science of health and the art of healing.
As a Board-Certified Nurse Coach, I partner with clients to:
· Identify personal health goals that align with their values
